2 (1 oz) squares unsweetened chocolate
1 1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1/4 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 t vanilla extract
40 cinnamon red hot candies
Preheat oven to 375 F. In a saucepan melt chocolate over low heat; let cool. In a small bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt. In a medium bowl beat butter on low speed until smooth. Add sugar and beat until creamy. Stir in egg, vanilla, and chocolate. Add flour mixture and mix well, forming a stiff dough. To make spider, shape a 2 inch oval for the body. Pinch a circle for the head. Shape dough for legs each about 2 inches long and less than 1/4 inch wide.
Attach the head and legs to the body. Put two red candies into head for the eyes. Bake for 8 minutes. Let spiders cool on the baking sheet to avoid breaking when moving.
Note: If you don't have the chocolate, you can substitute 3 T of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 T shortening for every one ounce unsweetened chocolate called for in the recipe. Also, we made three long legs instead of 6 and then just pressed the body on top of them (they were less likely to break off this way). This cookie tastes similar to a brownie. It is yummy!

Seriously cute. But don't tell Caleb they are spiders - spiders have 8 LEGS! :P
